Best Interior Design Trends for 2023

The interior design trends we’re sharing with you today go beyond “color trends” or “popular patterns.” Instead, they include home materials, features, and functionality that are making homeowners’ everyday life easier and more enjoyable.

That said, keep in mind that trends should always be taken with a grain of salt. Yes, we love gleaning inspiration from styles and design ideas that are growing in popularity, but at the end of the day, your home is about you. The smartest investment you can make is to create a home that feels intentional, timeless, high quality, and with your personality sprinkled in.

As you explore the 7 interior design trends below — and 3 that are on their way out — consider whether the trend fits your lifestyle, your tastes, and your home. And if you need help making this decision, you’re always welcome to stop by our showroom to consult one of our designers at no cost to you. The easiest way to get professional design advice you can use right away.

Design Trend: Quartz or Quartzite Countertopsluxe-home-by-douglah-designs-lafayette-ca-2023-trends-bathroom-vanity-with-upscale-sconses-framing-the-mirror

Durable, easy to maintain, and beautiful… what’s not to love about these countertop stones? Quartzite is a natural stone, while quartz is manmade and non-porous. However, both materials maintain similar qualities of being clean, solid, and resistant to staining. Plus, their variety of color selections presents a beautiful and affordable way to achieve a marble-like aesthetic without the price tag or high-maintenance upkeep. If you haven’t already, you can expect to see quartz and quartzite everywhere this year!

Design Trend: Single Bowl Kitchen Sinks

If you love hosting, you likely own several sizable kitchen tools and appliances. Washing those large serving platters in a tiny, split sink can be awkward. Enter, the single-bowl undermount sink. Large enough for difficult-to-clean cookware and seamlessly beautiful for everyday use. This year, you’ll notice these practical, clean workstations displayed in stainless steel or composite. Some sink units even come with serving attachments!

Design Trend: Statement Vent Hoods

Vent hoods are practical pieces within the kitchen, but that doesn’t mean they should be boring. Prepare to say goodbye to those bland, stainless steel vent hoods and hello to a beautiful piece of art that breathes life and style into your kitchen. We’ve been infusing client homes with our exclusive selection of gorgeous vent hoods for quite a while, and we don’t expect this trend to slow anytime soon. (More tips on adding statement pieces here.)

Design Trend: Intimate Task Lighting

It’s no secret lighting plays a pivotal role in our daily routines. It has the power to set a mood, create the desired environment, and of course, bring greater functionality to your space. So why not use task lighting to your benefit in every room? In 2023, we expect layered and intimate task lighting to be everywhere, from bathroom mirrors and vanities to sconces and recessed lighting…and we’re here for it. (Here’s how to choose the best lighting for your home.)

Design Trend: Large Showers with Open Entrances

It’s easy to see why the luxury of a sizable, two-person shower is a trend in 2023. These large, two-person showers offer an effortless and luxurious way to transform your bathroom into an oasis. And who doesn’t want to bask in a spa experience in the comfort of their own home? Bonus Tip: We’re also seeing the addition of extra shower amenities, like two shower heads, bench seating, and fully enclosed showers with steam features. (We love bathrooms that are designed for your health!)

Design Trend: Freestanding Soaking Tubs

Freestanding soaking tubs may not be new, but they are certainly taking off in popularity — and it’s easy to see why. They infuse luxury and relaxation while elevating the bathroom into a stylish and comfortable haven. Compare this look to the dated, ‘90s platform tubs (you know which ones we’re talking about), and you can see how they look cleaner and save precious bathroom space. You can find soaking tubs in an array of shapes, sizes, and finishes — so have some fun with it!

Design Trend: Statement Lighting

Before & After

Here’s another trend that isn’t exactly new to 2023, but is making a HUGE difference in the way kitchens look and feel: statement lighting. Many homes from earlier decades — or even newer, basic builder homes — come with recessed can lights in the kitchen. By adding statement lighting, like we did in the kitchen renovation above, the room feels larger, grander, and far more exciting to be in. (P.S. Pendants would be a great option here too!)

3 Interior Design Trends on Their Way Out

Hanging pot racks: Most people are starting to walk away from the bulky and visually busy hanging pot racks. Yes, it’s convenient for serious home chefs, but if you’re not a gourmet cook or don’t plan to become one, you’ll be happier organizing the pots in a deep drawer. (Where they won’t collect dust, either.) In their place, select stunning statement lighting to elevate your kitchen beautifully.

Granite countertops: Although granite is a solid countertop choice with unique patterns, the stone is now being associated with the ‘90s and early 2000s, and the grainy look is a style that’s on its way out. Most homeowners are now seeking the sleeker veins found in quartzite and marble countertops.

Cold gray tones: The era of cold gray tones has been edging out of the market for the last 5+ years. Although you may still see these tones on some home improvement shows (not naming names), don’t be misled. These days, warmer neutrals are the way to go if you care about the longevity of your design.

If your home currently boasts cool grays, come talk to us. We can propose solutions for warming the space up with a new paint color or with warm woods and textiles that balance the overall feel. (You can also read here for tips on creating your interiors’ color palette.)

That’s it for this month, but remember — the design industry is constantly changing, but comfort and functionality will always be in demand. A home that feels welcoming, enjoyable, and personal is a home that you’re likely to love long into the future.
