Marking a New Decade: 2020 Interior Design Trends

A new decade signals the flow of fresh perspective and daring ideas across all industries and popular culture– including interior design. In 2020, homeowners will start moving towards muted colors, modern twists on retro designs and lots of bold statement pieces. Our designers discuss styles that we’ll be seeing more of next year and throughout the next decade. Onward!

Wall Paneling

(Mindi Cooke, Design: Sedar & Suede)

Upgrading the aesthetics of your home doesn’t have to come at a heavy price point. We started to see wall paneling become popular over the last couple of years, and we think in 2020 more and more homeowners will gravitate towards this affordable option. We love how paneling brings clean lines and structure to modern, contemporary and transitional style homes.

Don’t worry– you aren’t limited to just vertical lines! Wall paneling can take on different patterns and shapes to draw the eye and add visual interest.

Statement Light Fixtures

Craving a major change, but don’t want to commit to a full remodel? A statement light fixture can lift up an entire room and tie the look together with a whole new personality.

A touch of modern design to a fixture instantly makes any space feel sleek! Straight lines and unique shapes offer smart simplicity and just a touch of whimsy.

This style of an all-white plaster fixture adds simple femininity to traditional design. We can picture this chandelier in a pretty blue bathroom or a beach-cabin style kitchen. So delicate and fresh!

We’re seeing color expressed in new, refreshing ways with pastels and lots of muted tones. Color can be added in unexpected places, like door molding, ceilings and kitchen islands.

Needless to say, combining trends makes for an even more exciting home improvement project! We think this look would be especially delightful in a master bathroom or baby room.

Dreaming of color, but aren’t interested in a permanent change? Opt for a statement bathtub! Victoria and Albert Baths now offer tubs in a spectrum of 194 RAL colors, including yellows, purples, greens and even orange. Having to choose just one will be tough!

Light Wood

Remember how light wood was everywhere in the 90’s? It’s coming back with major style. Lighter colored wood brightens up your home, adding friendly personality and contrast to darker furniture or countertops. Light wood also pairs well with so many different styles and color palettes, so it’s easy to bring this design element into your home and make it work within your existing space without having to undergo a major remodel.

Architectural design that goes outside the lines can transform your entire relationship with your house. Wood can go anywhere– the dramatic tones in this home are so fascinating. Definitely for the daring!

(Douglah Designs)

Light wood that flows up from the floor and wall-to-wall with cabinetry warms up the entire space and creates a cohesive look and feel. This palette is fabulous for neutral spaces, and looks even better with lots of natural light.

2020 holds exciting transformation in interior design. May the start of a new decade bring refreshing change, lots of color and joyous creativity! Visit our website to request a consultation with one of our designers and start planning your dream home today.
