Home Remodeling Transformation: A Serene Scandinavian Retreat
Every remarkable home transformation begins with possibility, and ends with thoughtful execution. At Douglah Designs, we believe that reimagining a space is more than just creating a beautiful design; it’s about bringing a client’s vision to life with precision and care. This journey begins with a conversation about what could be, and culminates in a home that not only looks stunning but also serves the unique needs of the homeowner for years to come.
In this post, we’ll explore an interior design transformation of a Scandinavian-inspired retreat that showcases how our design-build process can turn outdated spaces into functional, inspiring homes. From a complete overhaul of the interiors to a modernized exterior that embraces the surrounding natural beauty, these before and afters demonstrate how a strong vision combined with expert craftsmanship can turn any space into a sanctuary.
Project Brief: The Task at Hand
This Moraga home, nestled high atop the rolling hills, offered stunning panoramic views, but its outdated design failed to highlight the beauty surrounding it. The bulky, traditional exterior and dark, closed-off interiors didn’t reflect the homeowners’ desire for a peaceful, Scandinavian-inspired retreat. The potential was clear—this space had all the right bones, but it lacked the light, open feel the homeowners envisioned.
Our goal was to bring the outdoors in, creating a space that embraced natural light and the breathtaking views while maintaining a minimalist, calming aesthetic. Every detail of this transformation was carefully considered, from the layout to the finishes, with a focus on a design that was both functional and serene.
In the following sections, we’ll walk you through each space step by step, showing how we reimagined every corner to bring this home’s full potential to life.
The Entryway
Before: A Dated Entryway with Limited Appeal

The entryway felt disjointed and outdated, with a traditional design that didn’t complement the rest of the home. The ornate glass double doors, while once a feature, felt heavy and disconnected from the home’s modern aesthetic. The space was further cluttered by a bulky ceiling fan and an overall lack of cohesive design. It lacked the welcoming, airy feel the homeowners desired, making it more of a passageway than a space that sets the tone for the home.
After: A Bright, Minimalist Entry with a Striking First Impression

The redesigned entryway now makes an immediate impact, combining modern simplicity with functional design. A sleek black front door with clean lines replaces the outdated double doors, instantly elevating the space. The cluttered ceiling fan is replaced by a bold, contemporary light fixture, adding warmth and sophistication. The addition of minimalist furniture and a striking plant brings life and color to the space, while the clean lines and open feel create a more inviting atmosphere. The entire entry now flows seamlessly with the home’s Scandinavian-inspired design, setting a calming, welcoming tone from the very first step inside.
The Kitchen
Before: A Closed-Off, Outdated Kitchen

The kitchen was isolated from the rest of the home, with outdated cabinetry, dark countertops, and a lack of natural light. The space felt heavy and cramped, with bulky appliances and a disjointed layout that made it difficult to move around. The lack of flow between the kitchen and living area created a barrier, preventing the space from feeling cohesive and open.
After: A Light, Open Kitchen with Seamless Flow

The redesigned kitchen is a prime example of a kitchen renovation that elevates both the aesthetic and functionality. The bright, airy space features custom cabinetry with clean, minimalist details, complemented by light countertops that create a seamless, contemporary look.
The neutral palette, with its stark whites and soft grays, enhances the natural light that floods the room, creating a welcoming, open atmosphere. Thoughtful design details, such as open shelving, add both practicality and aesthetic appeal. The kitchen’s large window not only brings in abundant natural light but also offers an expansive view of the serene outdoors, making this space feel connected to nature.

The Breakfast Nook
Before: A Dull, Underwhelming Breakfast Nook

The breakfast nook, while offering a great view, was underutilized and lacked character. The space felt cluttered with mismatched items and decor that didn’t fit the overall aesthetic. The large window was partially blocked by clutter on the windowsill, making it difficult to fully appreciate the panoramic views outside. The light fixture, though functional, felt outdated and out of place, while the table and chairs didn’t complement the space or invite comfortable gatherings. The area lacked the inviting, serene atmosphere the homeowners desired.
After: A Bright and Inviting Breakfast Nook

In the newly updated breakfast nook, the simple elegance of the design speaks to the home’s Scandinavian-inspired aesthetic. The elegant white chairs and round table are perfectly positioned beneath a stunning sculptural light fixture, which draws the eye upwards and adds visual interest to the minimalist space.
The large window frames the breathtaking views of the Moraga hills, allowing the beauty of nature to become an integral part of the room’s design. With its clean lines, neutral tones, and understated decor, this space feels open, inviting, and serene—a perfect spot to enjoy a meal while taking in the peaceful surroundings.

The Living Room
Before: An Outdated Living Room

The living room felt outdated and cluttered, with mismatched furniture and decor that didn’t complement the home’s potential. The white brick fireplace appeared heavy and lacked the modern aesthetic the homeowners desired. The dark art and busy elements didn’t contribute to the serene, Scandinavian-inspired vision the homeowners wanted for the space. Overall, the room lacked flow and visual harmony.
After: A Sleek, Modern Living Room with Clean Lines

The updated living room features signature design pieces, such as the Alvar Aalto sectional and Scandinavian-inspired lighting, which elevate the space with a modern yet timeless aesthetic. A bold red accent chair introduces a striking pop of color, while the low-profile sectional and sleek geometric coffee table enhance the room’s spacious, inviting atmosphere.

The white brick fireplace was replaced with a sleek, contemporary gas fireplace framed in matte black, becoming the striking focal point of the room. The large windows allow natural light to flood the space, enhancing the airy design that connects the interior to the breathtaking views outside.
The Dining Room
Before: A Cluttered Space

The dining area, with its mismatched furniture and heavy, traditional decor, felt more like a living room than a designated dining space. The fireplace, though functional, seemed out of place and was cluttered with random decorations. The room lacked a cohesive design, with holiday lights and various items scattered around the mantel, making the space feel disorganized and cramped.
After: A Light-Filled, Modern Dining Room with Refined Elegance

The dining area was completely transformed into a sleek, minimalist space that embraces natural light. The new design makes full use of the skylight, allowing the room to feel bright and airy, while a modern dining table and Scandinavian-inspired woven chairs create a clean and inviting space for meals and gatherings. The outdated fireplace was replaced with a streamlined, linear version that serves as a striking focal point without overwhelming the space. Floating shelves with curated decor add elegance, and the overall design now feels spacious and serene, perfectly balancing modern style with functionality.
The Exterior
Before: A Dull and Unwelcoming Exterior

The brown shingle siding and traditional architectural style, while classic, didn’t align with the homeowners’ clean, minimalist tastes. The exterior failed to highlight the panoramic vistas or complement the natural beauty surrounding the property, leaving the home feeling disconnected from its stunning environment.
After: A Fresh, Modern Facade with Clean Lines

The exterior was transformed into a sleek, modern entrance that seamlessly blends with the landscape. We replaced the dated brown shingles with clean white stucco and simplified lines, offering a contemporary façade that complements the home’s surroundings. A bold, modern front door with large glass panels makes a striking first impression, complemented by minimalist light fixtures on either side. The new landscaping with clean, geometric lines and low-maintenance plants enhances the overall aesthetic, making the space feel open and inviting.
A Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Retreat

To elevate the home even further, we added a spacious new deck that seamlessly blends indoor and outdoor living. The pièce de résistance is the deck’s Finnish sauna and outdoor shower, which invite relaxation and connection with nature. This luxurious outdoor oasis enhances the home’s serene ambience, adding a touch of Nordic-inspired sophistication.
