Leila’s Modern Farmhouse: From Blueprint to Reality
Our East Bay remodeling studio’s principal designer, Leila Douglah, set out to construct a spacious new home for her family, only to realize that excess space was neither necessary nor desired. Seeking a more streamlined and practical solution, Leila initially transitioned to a smaller condo. However, the impracticality of this choice soon became evident, as her residence serves as the central gathering point for friends and family. Amidst this whirlwind of house-hunting woes, she discovered the enchanting Lafayette neighborhood of Silver Springs. Ultimately, she decided to acquire a modest home for her family, with the intention of undergoing a comprehensive renovation.
Design Vision
Initially, Leila envisioned a mere facelift, a quick home renovation project to breathe life back into its weary bones. However, structural issues prompted a strategic shift, leading to the decision to demolish the existing house and embark on an elegant farmhouse design plan with a ground-up reconstruction.
The vision was a laid-back design that would create an inviting and warm atmosphere. She aimed to ensure that her home didn’t feel overly formal, allowing guests to feel at ease and comfortable. As we designed this sanctuary of relaxation, every detail was carefully curated to reflect her vision. An open floor concept was also essential to her, helping to achieve a sense of openness and invitation throughout the house. The result is a modern farmhouse that perfectly embodies Leila’s vision of comfort and style, where guests instantly feel at home.

The journey was filled with excitement as Leila took on the dual roles of both contractor and client, fully aware that unforeseen challenges are an intrinsic part of construction.
Opting for a ground-up house reconstruction aligned better with budget considerations and provided greater creative freedom, allowing us to realize her dream home fully. We curated every detail to ensure a harmonious blend of comfort and style, creating an inviting atmosphere where guests feel instantly at home.

Entrance, Living Room, and Hallway
As you enter the front door, you’re greeted by sophisticated neutral tones, elegant decor, and curated lighting, setting the refined and inviting tone for the entire space.
In the living room, elegance meets comfort. A harmonious blend of comfortable furnishings and a rustic gray tile fireplace wall create a cozy atmosphere, perfect for unwinding with loved ones or hosting intimate gatherings.
The elegant hallway is adorned in a neutral palette. The focal point is a seated Buddha statue nestled in a wall niche, imparting a touch of serenity and sophistication.
Kitchen and Dining
The farmhouse kitchen remodel features a classic white and wood palette, creating a timeless culinary haven that perfectly blends rustic charm with modern elegance. The focal point is a spacious kitchen island adorned with exquisite lighting.
Adjacent, the modern farmhouse dining exudes refinement with sleek furniture and captivating lighting, making it the ideal setting for refined gatherings and culinary experiences.
Bedrooms and Bathrooms
The master bedroom features opulent furnishings, sophisticated lighting, and elegant decor, creating a bright and airy haven of relaxation. The en-suite farmhouse bathroom remodel features neutral tiles, a freestanding tub, and a spacious vanity, offering a blend of luxury and tranquility – the perfect sanctuary for rejuvenation and self-care.
The carefully curated guest bedroom and bathroom boast harmonious neutral palettes and exquisite lighting and decor, creating luxurious retreats for rest and rejuvenation.
Laundry Room
Open and closed shelving, artful tiles, and a spacious counter converge to offer both practicality and sophistication in the laundry room, ensuring that even daily chores are done in style. Plus, there’s a designated space under the counter for Leila’s beloved dog, Bodhi!
Mudroom
In the mudroom, storage meets tasteful decor, creating a welcoming space setting the entire home’s tone. Whether coming in from a busy day or preparing to venture out, the mudroom offers a seamless transition with its practical yet stylish design.
The Backyard
A primary objective was to connect indoor and outdoor spaces seamlessly, fostering a smooth transition between the two environments. To achieve this, we incorporated large sliding doors along the rear side of the house, opening up to a spacious back patio and logia, where warm wood tones and tasteful string lights create the ideal setting for intimate gatherings and relaxation. Whether enjoying a quiet morning coffee or hosting friends for an evening soiree, the pergola offers a tranquil retreat in the heart of nature.
House Exterior
The inviting facade of the home showcases clean lines and classic charm that create timeless curb appeal. With a blend of contemporary design and classic elegance, the modern farmhouse exterior exudes a welcoming atmosphere that draws you in from arrival.
